What Can we Learn From Failure?
When Success doesn't happen it can be viewed as failure. But, failure is a important milestone on the road to success and it is crucial to learn and adapt from it in order to not let it repeat itself.
Businesses fail for all sorts of reasons and it is important to understand these reasons so that you can stay away from them when starting your own business. The chart to the right shows the top reasons startups fail, keep in mind a lot of the reasons overlap causing the percentages not to add up which is another good thing to point out because with more causes of failure there is less chance for success. The top two reasons accounting for the majority cause are as bad as they are because they can lead to more and more failure. Having no market need can relate to poor product, bad location, and no investors. when starting your business you need to determine if the product or service you want to sell will fit with the market you are in. if you decide to sell winter gear in places were the climate is hot majority of the year your market will have no need for your product and you will fail. But if you start selling winter gear up in the mountains near ski resorts you will have a lot better market to work with and your chances of success will skyrocket. The second main cause, running out of cash is exactly what it sounds like and we talked about it earlier in our Overcoming Risks page. When a business runs out of cash they will not be able to afford upkeep costs that are crucial in keeping the business alive. There are ways such as business loans and investors to help with this problem but often times a already failing business will have trouble finding these because no one will want to invest in a declining business.
So what do you do after you have experienced failure in your business? You learn and adapt from it. To do this you have to learn from the failures that happened and realize where you did good, for example adapting to the changes and also understanding where and why it went wrong. By understanding your weaknesses you can then focus on them more to improve them and not let yourself fail again because you already know how it happened the first time and you won't let it happen again. When you learn from your failures you are adapting yourself to these challenges and teaching yourself to not let it happen again. These failure can be good for you in the long run because you will strengthen your resilience and learn to adapt to new challenges. over time, sometimes after many and many fails you will reach success.
One Of America's most famous innovators from its history shows us how success is come upon through failure, although he didn't refer to his errors as failures he claimed them as "finding ten thousand ways that won't work." Thomas Edison the man who invented the lightbulb and many other new innovation in his time, made his discoveries' through repeated failures and kept trying to improve and eventually succeed with them. Edidon is a amazing example of how when we are faced with failures we need to learn and adapt from them to move forward and find success.
